FALL RIVER — An accidental fire caused an estimated $150,000 damage to a first-floor unit at the Four Winds Apartments, 5500 N. Main St., Saturday.
Police and firefighters responded to a still alarm about 5 p.m. at Building 19 of the complex, located near the Freetown line.
Police Sgt. Joseph Castro was the first to arrive at the scene and reported a “lot of smoke showing.” He immediately began evacuating the 36-unit building and soon was assisted by other officers.
District Fire Chief Michael Brodeur said the tenant in Apartment 101, Peter Girovard, was changing bed linen and had placed a pillow on the floor. The pillow leaned against an automatic night light that went on when the pillow blocked the light, heating the pillow and melting its foam. The resulting fire spread to a hallway and a living room, Brodeur said.
He noted that it was fortunate that the Engine 3 crew was in quarters on Commerce Drive and not at the Stanley Street station, enabling them to get to the fire much quicker.
All tenants were able to return to their apartments except Girovard, who said he had another place to stay.

ALL OF THESE RECENT FIRES ARE A REMINDER AS TO THE IMPORTANCE OF HAVING A COMPLETELY STAFFED FIRE DEPT AND POLICE DEPT .

Engine company 3 was always in the north end and was never shut down so even with the cuts they still would have been there.. Engine 3 should never be shut down because of the large industrial area. They actully need to move more units to the North end but don't need more fire fighters.

If you want more units in the industrial area, but no more firefighters, who is going to man the apparatus. YOU ARE A COMPLETE AND TOTAL MORON

Thanks jakesdad I didn't feel like pointing that out this early in the morning but, Engine 3 used to be at the bedford street station and engine 6 was at airport road. Engine 6 was closed after the layoffs and Engine 3 was moved North. It is a much more quite neighborhood and is probably next oon the chopping block if there are any more layoffs or if we continue to lose people to retirment and never replace them.

I may be completely off-base here, but how does a night light cause a pillow to catch fire?

Chinese Quality Station Nightclub foam. Back in the 70's we had laws about the manufacture of flammable material that would be brought into the home. Guess it doesn't apply to China.

about time these guys work for their money. sleeping 8 hours while getting paid is something that i do not agree with and if the hours force you to do that, then switch the hours so you work 8 hours at a time.

i do have to say though that they did a good job at keeping the fires from spreading to other buildings in all three incidents

Iwontwin, making 40 dollars an hour for directing traffic is something i do not a agree with. Watching red box movies in your cruiser is something I do not agree with. Surfing the internet on your I-phone, while in your cruiser is something I do not agree with. Taking a nap behind a mill is something I do not agree with. Put your large ego aside for a minute and worry about what goes on in your department.

I live in Unit 19 at the Four Winds. My wife, infant son and I were in the building for over 10 minutes as it burned. No alarms went off and none of the fire doors contained the smoke. I could smeel the smoke from my apartment, but though someone was cooking something and burnt it. I was called by a neighbor and that's how I found out my unit was on fire. When I entered the hallway it was filled with thick, black smoke. Police and firefighters were knocking door to door and still there were no alarms. I know for a fact if this was at night and the fire department was not in the area this would be a bigger story. It was nice to see neibors helping everyone out because it was cold and wet outside. People offered cars to sit in or apartments to warm up in. I still want to know why the alarms did not signal!! That's a huge safety concern.

I can only assume you are a firefighter. Let me just say I make pretty good money sometimes i work long hours and I work a job i choose so yes i have to come to expect that but when work is slow i still do work. I don't wash my car or sit infront of my office building in a chair waving at people that drive by. Do firefighters have a hard and dangerous job when there is a fire.. sure do... would i want to go into a burning building hell no.. but what fire fighters do in down time I DO NOT agree with.. Lift weights..wash cars..sit in chairs... play on the internet in the station that is paid for by the city and taxes....one sttion i am told had PING PONG and pool tables.
AS FOR THE POLICE.
They make at times take a nap is it right no but would you rather then crash into a pole because the fall asleep because they HAVE to be out driving and cant be doing what the fire department does. I will deal with that as a taxpayer. As far as details go check out Boston.com a study just showed that FLAGGERS GET PAID MORE with all the insurance and other aspects and they can't do anything a police officer can do and it comes from state taxes rather then being paid by for the company check it out...I am all for equality so lets try this for a week ALL police sleep in the stations at night.. you don't have to go out till a call comes in.. see what the response time is and how crime goes..

Yes, there is only one engine at the Center station. Heavy Rescue and Car 2 are there also.
Engine 3 was moved to Commerce Drive to cover the closing of Engine 6 and the ladder was moved to Stanley St. to cover the closing of Ladder 5.
There are no additional men on the apparatus that are left. They usually run with 3 firefighters each.
Why did I copy the story AND the comments section?
Because there has been a disturbing and ugly tone to comments flowing back and forth between supporters of the Fall River Fire and Police Department's. This is a time of violent drug related street crime, publicised home invasions, a recent housing authority property double homicide, and a recent spate of serious mill fires and apartment blazes that involved loss of life and other related injuries. All of this is taking place while facing a genuine revenue decline from state sources for upcoming budgets. This nonsense will not engender widespread public support for an override which will eventually be needed.
I, like all supportive Fall River residents, do not want to view such juvenile displays on the comments section of the Herald News. It seems to be a constant thing now. The HN comments section is already home to many known cranks and members of Teabagger Nation that want only to attack the most vulnerable among us for nothing more than the fault of being alive, in most instances. Now we have to endure image destroying insults hurled back and forth between two camps that should be working together, must be working together, in order for this City's government to surive.
Stop acting the fool! You know better! When you pull this stuff all it does is reinforce the feeling in many Fall River residents that there is no hope of success or renewal.
For someone who enjoys the foibles of our City as a source of humor and satire, this new sort of insult activity does not come from a place of action or positivity at all. It only reflects an evil spirit among the participants. There is not a scintilla of constructive thought evidenced by the words of these contsant attackers. Maybe I'm getting more realistic in my dotage but we cannot afford this foolishness, not now, not ever. We need to be joining together to grow together out of this mess in which we find ourselves. Just SHUT UP, and try to get along if you are going to refuse to work together.
AS a side note:
I am troubled by the constant machinations involved in the property being developed by Arthur Winn Development in Fall River. This man is a power source unto himself. He is far more connected with power centers in Washington and throughout the U.S. than any person or entire groups of people in Fall River. He could easily hold the Karams in the palm of his hands and blow then away like grains of sand. So it troubles me when there are fires adjacent to parcels this man wants to develop. It troubles me greatly. It should trouble you as well. WE should all watch what the connections are here in Fall River between those in positions of power in Fall River and the WINN Cabal, because it rightfully can be classified as such.
Let's all watch and see who the puppets are on the end of the strings being pulled by Arthur Winn. Let's call him Papa Gepetto from now on. I can't wait to see who the Pinocchio Donkey Boy is! :-)

BTW-- did I miss something or did they not publicize the results of that double homicide investigation at Sunset Hill with the mother and child? What really happened? Do you know, Laz?
ReplyDeleteAs far as I know nothing other than what has been published in the press has been updated. If the papers are to be believed this was a case of a clearly PTSD suffering war veteran, who medicated himself with alcohol, with a recent history of violent outbursts who simply lost it one last time, and his wife and child suffered the ultimate consequence. Absolutely sad story.
ReplyDeleteAlso, we may never know the full story, given that it is Fall River and the agencies of government here have a long and tawdry history of covering up for one another, but there is some controversy surrounding why it took so long for Housing Authority to find out there were two dead persons left for a week in their apartment when others noted they had not been seen anywhere around the property, which for these people was apparently unusal. That also has been reported in the press.
Laz....
ReplyDeleteFor the same reasons I refuse to listen to Herren, I refuse to read the HN blogs. Typical Fall River PBR drinking trash. Most of those comments are posted by mental midgets that have sophomoric behavior. The sad part is that some are posted by actual police officers and fire fighters. Most are probably imposters.
With respect to the Sunset Hill incident, the silence is deafening. The authorities are probably doing a very through job, as usual. Which is a good thing.
A fan.....
I think you are probably right about the investigation. They are probably going more deliberately in order to find the culprit with certainty and ensure a conviction.
ReplyDeleteI'm also afraid I have to agree with your comments of most of the regular contributors to the HN's comments section. I thank the Good Lord that moms made me study!
